Commercial Exposure

Last month, Terry and I joined the 21st century by upgrading our cable TV, which quadrupled the number channels our kids, I mean we, can watch. Now, instead of watching the same 7 episodes of Clifford the Big Red Dog over and over again on PBS, I've got four kid-friendly stations for my kids to choose from.
While we’re all enjoying the variety of shows—I can’t get enough of the adorable Chica the Chicken on Sprout TV—I’m not too happy to be exposing my kids to commercials for the first time. Because most of the commercials are for cleaning products, I thought they were geared toward the parents watching these shows along with their children.
But I was wrong. After viewing a commercial for the new Woolite Rug Stick, James said, “Mommy, we need to buy this to make our carpet beautiful.” This commercial depicting a woman getting rid of carpet stains with toxic foam helped Woolite win over a new customer at the tender age of 3.
Thanks to these commercials, it’s no wonder that the average American household accumulates up to 100 pounds of hazardous household waste, including cleaning products, paints, oils, batteries and pesticides. Commercial-free television really does come at a price.

This is why we watch Noggin. There are no commercials for fast food or stupid toys like Bendaroos or cleaning products or snuggies.

Granted, the big girls aren't thrilled about watching Oswald, but that's why they have books!

What a dilemma...I too don't want my son watching TV until he's a little older, but it's crazy how well advertising works on kids, even products that you'd think they wouldn't be interested in.

And of course it was for something filled with chemicals that the kids would be ingesting when playing on the floors.

PS, I made your spray cleaner yesterday (from your TGT post a few weeks ago) and it's great. I think the Borax added a little something more to my usual mix of vinegar, water and tea tree oil.

Yes, I agree. And it's one reason we aren't watching much Sprout any more. We stick to Noggin, now.

We love chicka in our house. Isla particularly loves it she comes running when she hears. The whole commercial thing is hard, but next you'll just need to get a DVR then you can record the program and can skip the adverts!!

My kids are like this too. They want everything they see on TV! Crazy! But i kinda think that they're going to be exposed to this kinda stuff sooner or later. And better now when they still listen to us as parents instead of later when they won't.
I'm surprised that the average household has 100 pounds of toxic waste!

The boys don't watch much tv, mostly Discovery Channel and PBS. But they get commercials when we watch the news. And if one of them tells me one more freakin' time that I need Nutrasystem, my evil twin is going to emerge and rip heads off bodies. ;)

My daughter is convinced that I need some Mighty Putty. Isn't that weird?

I just saw the commercial the other night and thought HOW RIDICULOUS now your baby is on clean looking toxic carpet.

when my daughter started watching non PBS cartoons that is all I heard:

"Mommy, can you buy me this? Mommy, can you buy me that?"
