Greenbacks For A Greener World

In our market-driven economy, money speaks louder than words. What better way, then, to make your views heard than to try to buy from companies that adhere to your environmental and social standards?
The Better World Shopping Guide, by Ellis Jones, makes it easier to do that. I won a copy from the Green Mom Finds web site and really like it. The book grades the companies that manufacture items you typically shop for, such as gasoline and dairy products, based on their environmental and social standards. The companies are listed in a chart format, making it quick to compare companies while you shop. Plus, the book is only 6 inches by 4 inches, so it fits easily in my purse.
The book came in handy the other week when I was at Costco. I saw a 96-ounce bottle of Method hand soap for $7. It would cost less to buy than make my own; plus I liked the idea of buying it in bulk so there’s less packaging to recycle. The guide gave Method an A, so I felt good about buying it.
My Thrifty Green Thursday tip of the week is to tuck a copy of The Better World Shopping Guide in your purse along with your rolled-up cloth shopping bag. Click here for more tips.

What a great book. I've read other books like it but I like that you can stash this one in your purse. What good does it do you to try and remember all of that information.

Gotta figure out my TGT post!

I am so glad method gets a good rating! I love their products. In fact, I'm in the process of sending some of their hand soap to my sister because she can't find it in LA.

Sounds like a great book. And yes, we all need to be supporting eco companies.

I would love to have that book! It's tough to weigh my impressions of companies with their actual track records while raising a child, working and getting enough sleep. How nice that there's now a simple way to check without all the extra research! Thanks for joining us this week for Thrifty Green Thursday!

That does sound like a handy book to have. Like Kathleen, I think it's great that it's small so you can actually carry it around.

Thanks for joining us for Thrifty Green Thursday despite the dreaded Mr. Linky mishap.
