Knowing how much Ethan loves dinosaurs, my indulgent mom bought him a Pleo for his birthday. A Pleo, according to the web site, is a “first fully-animatronic simulacrum of a one week-old dinosaur (a Late Jurassic period Camarasaurus.) It has a sophisticated sensory system comprised of a color camera, two sound sensors, two infrared sensors, 14 servos, 106 gears, eight touch sensors, an orientation sensor, and four foot switch sensors, all of which form a biomechanical skeleton that delivers smooth, natural movements.”
Yeah, yeah, yeah, but does it act like a real animal? For the most part, it does. Since Pleo entered our home, I’ve started taking care of it like it was real puppy or kitty. The first time I petted its rubbery back and it wiggled and made cooing noises at me, I was hooked. I hear all the gears whir around to make him wag his tail, but his big blue eyes still melt my heart. In fact, when Ethan and James get bored of Pleo and move on to a new toy, I pick him up and carry him around because, as scary as it sounds, I don’t want this robot to feel neglected.
My husband is happy that all we have to do to take care of Pleo is recharge the battery.
